I have recently finished my 7th week of teaching as a first year art teacher. Teaching is the hardest yet most rewarding thing that I have ever done. That said, I LOVE what I do. My students are my favorite part of the job and because of that, I feel I am doing exactly what I was meant to do. Building relationships and establishing and maintaining expectations can get over whelming at times, but I hope that my students know how much I care about their success. Not just as an artist, but as individuals. Often times the middles school years can be awkward. I still cringe when I reflect upon some of my own middle school memories. I guess that is why I take great lengths to create a calm, inviting, and safe classroom environment where students can have a place to reflect, create, and practice mindfulness. I am truly grateful for these kids, as have taught me so much in such little time.

Thirteen interviews, countless resumes and cover letters later, I got the Job!! I am proud to announce that I will joining Jardine Middle School in Topeka, Kansas. I am excited to be a Jaguar, and am anxious to meet my students and fellow faculty. I believe whole heartily that together, we are going to build a fantastic art program and do great things. I can not wait to see what the future brings. I am truly grateful for this opportunity.
I found a fantastic lesson that I am teaching for the first time to my Art II students. I would like to give credit to http://www.refrigeratorgood.com/2013/06/high-school-art-lesson-cardboard_6.html for sharing!
This blog is written with a more direct audience in mind. I am honored to have a chance to work with the advanced art students of Eudora High School. As we begin our journey for this project, please keep in mind that much like your future, the possibilities for this project are endless. Here is a video I found that may help find a social issue worth addressing. Enjoy~ Yesterday I returned from the National Art Educators Association Conference and as I sit here and reflect upon this remarkable experience, I know in my heart that art education is my intended path. It is a great thing to be around others who share your passion, inspire you, and support you in every way possible. If you are an art educator, I highly recommend joining as I cannot think of any other professional development that can provide this level of support in such a short amount of time. As a beginning educator I found this conference an invaluable resource. I have heard many say that they can't afford it but in my opinion you can't afford not to do it. So to my NAEA friends, I will see you next year in Chicago!!!
