Welcome to all things Jardine!
A little about ourselves
We are Jardine Middle School located in Topeka KS. I have decided to create a page that is all things Jardine. It my hope to share information about upcoming events, opportunities for community engagement, and showcase lessons we are currently working on. My intention is to provide another way in which students, parents, friends, and fellow colleagues can stay connected with new and exciting things we are doing within our art department, our school, and our community.

Introduction to Contour Drawing
Jardine Students will explore the works of Kansas's own Elizabeth Grandma Layton. By way of better understanding her work, students will create a contour self-portrait with added imagery that depicts themselves. This lesson is an introduction to drawing which allows for our students to participate in reflective practices while experimenting with the concept of drawing and painting.

Value and Celebrity Self portrait
Jardine students have been practicing value by way of creating value scales. To demonstrate they understand value and its use in drawing, students got to pick and draw their favorite celebrity and draw them. Using the grid method students transferred shapes, and values from the photo to their drawing. Though many found this to be a difficult process, many students really enjoyed this lesson. I have some great examples below. Enjoy!!
CELEBRITy grid drawings
This fall is my first year teaching art at Jardine Middle School and I am working very hard to give the students a voice in the projects they do. It has been challenging yet rewarding to follow in the footsteps of a well respected and very missed teacher. I am thankful for the traditions that Mrs. Armstrong left behind. One of the most popular lessons that students always want to do is the celebrity grid drawings. I felt that this was the perfect way to help my students build confidence in their abilities, share their personal interests, while focuses on the importance of value and proportion. I feel that this project was the turning point with my students and we were able to work together to problem solve, and navigate as a team through the project. Students spent eight days on this project and as a result, many successful drawing were created. Here are just a few. There are more to see on the Jardine Middle School ART dept Facebook page.

Whirl wind of a first semester!
Thank you Jardine 8th grade! I believe that we had a successful first semester, and as a first year teacher, I am very proud of the work my students were able to produce. This semester we made some modifications in our approach to learning art and focus became centered around the process of art making. That said, I feel that many of my students were proud of the work that they produced and over this semester, they were able to explore a variety of media. Here is a look at what we did over our semester. Many of the ideas that I used for lessons are a collection of lessons from other great art teachers, their amazing blogs, and the wonderful community of educators I have been fortunate to become a part of. Yes, of course I made changes to make it my own, but I believe that one should always give credit where credit is due. Here are some of the best examples of what we did this year. Enjoy.
